Resolution Number 12667 of 2013, issued by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC),
imposed a preventive order of suspension of the marketing of certain products whose purpose is the coating of windows with a chain or cord
system and which do not have a safety device to prevent the adjustment from hanging freely. In summary, the resolution seeks to prevent risks
to the health and safety of consumers, especially children, associated with the design and lack of warnings on curtains and blinds marketed in Colombia.
Although to date, in Colombia, there have been no reported cases of affecting the life, health, or integrity of any person due to the product
and its respective accessories, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission warned of deaths and injuries related to curtains and blinds
with cords, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported risks of strangulation, especially in children, related to the adjustment cords
of curtains and blinds, and in seven Member States of Europe, 90 children visited emergency departments of hospitals for injuries caused by blinds and curtains
with cords in 2002.
Internationally, regulation has been stricter and there are standard measures regarding the length of the cord, in Colombia this measure is not regulated, however,
Cortineros Líder SAS and Novelty Home foreseeing this situation and adapting to international standards, ensuring the care of our consumers and users, we offer several
options for the length of the chain at the time of purchase.
Since then, in Colombia, resolutions 12667 and 38973 of 2013 oblige all importers, manufacturers, distributors, and traders of curtains and blinds that use cords, ropes,
strings, and drive chains as "type of adjustment" to provide a safety device that prevents them from hanging freely within reach of children in the form of a circle, loop,
or ring and thus allow mitigating the risk of strangulation.
